An Intro to European Windows

European windows - that is, windows designed and manufactured in Europe - lead the industry in style and performance.

European windows may also be referred to as tilt and turn windows, or German windows. They often, though not always, feature a sleek modern style. In terms of performance, European windows can meet the highest standards in:

  • Thermal energy efficiency, including for Passive House building projects

  • Sound protection

  • Forced entry resistance

However, it’s traditionally been difficult to find true European windows in the US. Until now.

European Tilt and Turn Windows

Learn all about the signature European window, the tilt and turn window.

European tilt and turn windows were designed in Germany in the 1950s for ease-of-use and performance. Today, this style dominates the European market.

The name “tilt-and-turn” describes how these European windows open. If you turn its handle by 90 degrees, it opens like a normal door to the interior of the room. If you turn the handle by another 90 degrees, the window tilts open toward the interior of the room to allow for easy and secure ventilation. The video shows how tilt-and-turn windows work.

European tilt and turn windows promise unique functionality and design, enhanced security, better quality, superior thermal efficiency and exceptional durability and longevity. This is because European tilt and turn windows feature multi-point locking and multi-layered seals.

Tilt and turn windows can be combined with fixed window elements to create more interesting window layouts in one assembly. Bauwerk offers both tilt and turn windows and European casement windows, as well as matching doors, to ensure a consistent design.

European Casement Windows

“European casement windows” is another way of describing opening window units. Bauwerk offers tilt-only and turn-only European casement windows when needed.

Tilt-and-Turn (or Tilt-Only, or Turn-Only) European Casement Windows

European casement windows are inward-opening windows. In some cases, you may want your window to only tilt or only turn based on the interior architecture of your space. In those cases, Bauwerk can provide European casement windows for your every need.

Fixed Casement Windows

We also offer fixed units. Some people do call fixed windows “casement windows.” This is mostly due to the region.

Fixed windows offer minimized frame widths, and are perfect in places where you want to maximize the view. These fixed elements can be integrated with functioning windows and doors, resulting in stunning and unique assemblies.

FAQs about European Windows

  • The cost of European windows depends on a variety of factors, including material, number of glazing panes, and performance criteria. Vinyl windows, which are sometimes called PVC or uPVC, are the most affordable.

That said, the cost of European windows are comparable to the cost of a traditional double-hung window, but European windows typically outperform their American counterparts. This is especially true when you start to explore premium materials like steel and aluminum.

From that perspective, European windows can be approximately the same cost but a significantly better value.

  • European windows open inwards for security and weather protection, while providing ventilation. When a European window is tilted open, it’s still extremely resistant to forced entry. Plus, tilting inward helps keep precipitation outside.

  • This is a misconception! It’s definitely possible to get insect screens even for European windows.

  • Of course! We offer both matching and complimentary doors for all of our modern European window options.
